Georgetown Fall

I had an hour in between jobs on Wednesday so I ran 7 blocks to Georgetown and snapped some pictures before heading back to work.

Sorry Utah, you've got nothing on an East coast Fall!

I'm headed to NYC tonight with 2 roomies and a buddy.  Just a quick weekend trip.
Oh how I love this life!

How To Make Pumpkin Pie

Wise Words

Saw this magnet at my favorite bakery, Baked and Wired, in Georgetown last night.

I like.  I'm working on it.

Paula, Paula, Paula

I shudder every time I see her magazine in the grocery store.  I think she is absolutely adorable on her Food Network show, but those eyes!

They peer into my soul!

Today was a great day for some great conversations.

I was walking to the post office and I heard a guy talking on his phone, he said, "It's okay because we're only kind of Jewish".  Nice.

Once in the post office I got to the clerk to mail off a package.  He looked at my license and noticed it was from Utah.  He said, "Can I ask you a question about Utah?"  I said, of course, that would be fine.

He leaned close to me, looked me in the eye and asked, "Is polygamy legal in Utah?".  I had to laugh out loud.  I let him know that it's not legal in any state in the US, to which he replied, "Oh, so they just tolerate it in Utah?"  Ha!

Geez, you host a smashingly successful Olympics and all people can focus on is plural marriage?  Yikes!

I Am

This makes me SO happy

Making a Life

My sister bought me this book for my birthday.  It was a good, interesting story and a nice, easy read.  This post is not a book review.  I came across a quote while reading that really struck me.  At the time I underlined it because I liked it, but now I'm not so sure.

"You make a life out of what you have, not out of what you're missing"

I like it for these reasons: life is truly what we make it, again - comparing with others and basing our happiness on haves or have-nots is no good, and we should not focus on what we think we're lacking and ignore our blessings.

Why is dislike this quote: who determines what a "normal" life consists of?  What is missing if you are happy with life?

I see the point of the quote, to focus on what we have and be grateful everyday for our blessings and don't get too caught up in what we think we don't have.  I just wish it was, "You make a life out of what you have, not out of what you think you're missing"

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, October 14, 2010

I have been thinking about heartache a lot lately.  A few years ago I read a note from a reader in People magazine that belittled a celebrity's heartache because this reader felt her experience was more painful.  The comments from that reader really annoyed me.

We all have our hurts and our wounds, but it serves no one if we compare them with others.  I know many of us want to feel like our situation is the worst and that we are so picked on but comparing heartaches does nothing to improve our lot.

We can never truly know how anyone else feels because we don't live in their skin, we live in ours.  I don't know what it's like to be married, but I also don't know what it's like to struggle with infertility.  Is one of those worse than the other?  Probably, but how we experience them can never be measured on any scale because heartaches are what makes OUR heart ache.

Let's not compare.  Let's get to work.
Love you.

I had a dream last night that I needed some information.
The information could be obtained by standing on a box.
I woke up in the middle of my room, standing on my laptop.
True story.
(It's fine) (I'm another story!)

Please leave me your book suggestions in the post below!

Halloween Offenders

'Tis the Fall season and that means scarves, cider and changing colors.
OR, if you're me, it's all about the candy.  I mean, hooray for scarves or whatever but *candy* is at a veritable free fall around this time of year.  I should know, I bought 3 bags at Target yesterday.
Free fall!

Let's talk about the seedy side of the candy world.  The underbelly, the creepy cousin that your mom forces you to be nice to, the secret family shame.  In other words - these guys:

I'm pretty sure only dads eat these.  I know mine did.

Candy Corn
aka "Satan's Candy"

Getting raisins is just offensive if you ask me.  When I was a kid it was like, "yeah, thanks for trying to not rot my teeth but I think that's the whole point to tonight.  So go back to your fridge, put this pack of raisins back and I'll take your slightly used bottle of Hershey's syrup"

Mary Jane's Peanut Butter Kisses
The worst.  The absolute worst.  Does any one person on the planet like these?  You remember when you got home from trick-or-treating and you dumped out your bag on the floor and you had a bunch of these?  These nasty things are dream killers.

Rock Star Cowboy

Today while I was sitting in my wet pants and soaked shoes I let my mind wander back to St Thomas.  I then thought of this guy:

He and his friend were sunbathing next to us.  I think they were from Europe because they were both in Speedos and kept taking pictures of each other but would then be all pervy and check out the ladies.

I pulled out my camera and put it by my side and started snapping.  Unfortunately I didn't get a clear shot of this homeboy but I might just prefer this composition anyway.

Jerilyn - I can see you drooling from here.  Be a lady!

UPDATE:  check out Jerilyn's reply here.  Oh yeah.

We have rain on the docket for our Monday out here in DC, but let's make the best of it, agreed?
Sigh.  If only my striped rain boots matched my "uniform".
Have a wonderful week!

"Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket--safe, dark, motionless, airless--it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable."

-C.S. Lewis
