Going Off The Grid

I survived Hurricane Sandy! Hooray! Now I'm going off the grid for 10 days. No blogging, texting, Facebook, or emailing......

....and I am SO excited about it! Sometimes not having the ability to communicate is an absolutely wonderful thing.

Be good while I'm gone!

Waiting Out Sandy

I'm in my bedroom listening to the rain and winds rage outside. Apparently we're still not seeing the worst of it. Midnight is supposed to bring the strongest winds, historically strong in fact. Great. I love living in an area that is steeped in history but I do not love twiddling my thumbs in the middle of a hurricane that is registering the highest, fastest winds ever seen on the East Coast.

So for now I have still have power. Meaning I twiddle my thumbs, I watch movies, I work on crocheting my blanket, I don't have melting ice cream to eat,I stave off the insanity threatening my brain (this wind is freaky, y'all), and I wait.

Please keep us in your prayers

I'm 84 Years Old

Some evenings you get home from work, throw on your jammies, and disregard all invitations for social contact so that you can work on crafts. Some evenings you'll crochet row after row until you bring about carpal tunnel syndrome and bend over that canvas fixing lines until it feels like your back is going to break. Totally more fun than interaction, right?

All because you've always been an old soul.
That term is endearing when you're 22, when you're 30 it feels a bit too true.

(the quote comes from my favorite song "Can't Help Falling In Love", originally by Elvis. i'm obsessed with the Ingrid Michaelson version, check it out here)

Just Trust Me!

2 sqrt(-abs(abs(x)-1)*abs(3-abs(x))/((abs(x)-1)*(3-abs(x))))(1+abs(abs(x)-3)/(abs(x)-3))sqrt(1-(x/7)^2)+(5+0.97(abs(x-.5)+abs(x+.5))-3(abs(x-.75)+abs(x+.75)))(1+abs(1-abs(x))/(1-abs(x))),-3sqrt(1-(x/7)^2)sqrt(abs(abs(x)-4)/(abs(x)-4)),abs(x/2)-0.0913722(x^2)-3+sqrt(1-(abs(abs(x)-2)-1)^2),(2.71052+(1.5-.5abs(x))-1.35526sqrt(4-(abs(x)-1)^2))sqrt(abs(abs(x)-1)/(abs(x)-1))+0

Copy and paste the formula above for a fun surprise!
UPDATE: copy and paste into GOOGLE

The Things You Remember....

In 4th grade we had to memorize a tongue twister that has STUCK (like, cemented, not going anywhere) with me. You up for a challenge? Here it is:

A tutor who tooted the flute
Tried to tutor two tutors to toot.
Said the two to the tutor,
Is it better to toot
Or to tutor two tutors to toot?

I can remember this sort of stuff but not my online passwords. Sheesh.

Jim Henson

Did you know that Jim Henson went to University of Maryland? I just found this out last week when I was touring the campus.

(I guarantee my mom loves this photo)

His famous Muppet characters, Waldorf and Statler, were based on two of his cranky professors who didn't support his efforts. Rumor also says that Miss Piggy was based on an ex girlfriend.....but that's just a rumor.

All of this is just so happy and nostalgic but let me make your day even a little bit brighter -

The end slays me!

Dumbest Kid Ever

A young boy enter a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world.  Watch while I prove it.”

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then he calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?”

The boy took the quarters and left the dollar.

After the boy left the shop the barber turned to the customer, “What did I tell you?  That kid never learns!”

Later, the customer leaves and sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream shop.  He ask, “Hey, son!  May I ask you a question?  Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?”

The boy licked his cone, smiled and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game’s over!”

I find this to be quite hypnotic
Like in the sense that I watched this 3 times in a row

Sometimes I need someone to just come take my computer away and tuck me in to bed because when they don't - I watch videos like this over and over

I'm Pretty.......On the Inside

Jimmy Fallon and the writers of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon have a book called "Thank You Notes" which is a cute little flip book full of sarcastic 'thank you's' to real life situations that get under our skin.

I flipped it open at my friend's house the other day and this was the one I got. Funny because last year at the ward retreat I won the superlative "Most Photogenic"........

My acceptance speech was something like this, "photogenic means busted in real life but somehow you get that to translate better on film....thanks for voting every one". I was NOT feeling well that night.

Now Jimmy Fallon has confirmed my worst fear.
