Why? Why? Why?


Since there is very little work right now I have been able to go to the gym every day.  It's great!  
Except I have noticed a strange phenomena - not dogs in jeans but people in jeans!  I don't get it.  It's mainly older people walking on the treadmill or riding a stationary bike, but STILL!  JEANS!

I won't be attempting this to try to understand where they're coming from, but please, feel free to and then let me know your thoughts on joggin' in jeans.

Good Vibes for Rhonda!

One of my dear friends is taking her NIC performance tomorrow (Thursday).  PLEASE send her your prayers, good vibes, and happy thoughts all day!  

She is one of the most ethical people I have ever known and if I could be half the interpreter she is then I will have a long, illustrious and profitable career.  She is deserving of everything good and I don't mean to threaten but if you don't send her at least ONE zen thought then I won't send any your way when you take your tests!

Idol No More


Does anyone still watch this show?  I watched a few of the middle seasons and got REALLY invested but could not care less anymore.  I used to only watch the horrid auditions and then stop, but now I don't even watch the auditions.

I don't know anyone who follows it anymore - yet it remains the dominant #1 show in TV.  I don't get it!    Maybe if more people knew about 30 Rock, Modern Family and Community the ratings would change....

Hopefully with Simon leaving so will their ratings.

Of course, my dear Target didn't let me down.
I got these darling loafers that just looked too Martha's Vineyard for me to pass up!



They are super cute on and I can't wait to wear them!

Speaking of shoes (which I do often), these are my current faves.  They are much more awesome in person, if you can believe it.  They make me super tall and I love the lift at the toe.  It was love at first sight - I'm sure they felt the same way.



Don't you just "love" the impromptu photoshoot in my room?!?  Yeah, the beige carpet really set the artistic tone for this one.  Up top I was wearing my gym clothes because I was procrastinating the torture session yet to come.  Why am I writing in past tense?  I am STILL procrastinating going to the gym!

I Don't Watch Lost


...but I DO watch the Bachelor/Bachelorette series!  Cute Ali from last season of the Bachelor is back tonight!  I loved her on last season until the end when she seemed to get a little crazy (but who doesn't have their moment, am I right?)  Can't wait!

Wear Sunscreen

This is 10+ years old but I was reminded of it today.  It made quite a splash back then but I think it's definitely still applicable.  The author wrote this as an article for the Chicago Herald Tribune and her idea was to write it as though she had been asked to give a commencement address for a class of graduating college seniors.  Enjoy!


"Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '97:

Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.

Everyone IS great! I'm so grateful for the variety of talents and gifts we all possess - and more than that, I'm grateful when people are willing to share them! Don't think that you have none - discouragement will never help you realize who you are - you were born to be something and do things that no one else can.  In serving we can be great, even if it's not on a world stage, the person we impact will know we're great. When I'm in need I appreciate those willing to help me....but what if they thought they had nothing to offer?  Life is meant to be abundant and we need the help and service of others to help us realize our potential and to make our lives as abundant as they are meant to be.

Meatless May


Eliza proposed that we try to do "Meatless May" - it's just how it sounds, no eating meat for the month of May.  Since we returned from the cruise we've done a lot of research on healthy living and that includes limiting how much meat we eat.  It has been nice to have a partner in crime on this so that not everyone thinks I'm crazy - they think she is crazy as well.

It's funny when I tell people about my decision to limit my meat intake - a lot of people seem to be offended.  I don't get it.  I can only guess that they expect me to go all PETA on them and sit them down for a slideshow of animal brutality.  I know the facts but I'm not going to spew them all over everyone I know, but if you'd like to know about the health side of it I would be happy to talk about it.  

Someone told Eliza that she is going against the Word of Wisdom (click here if you have no idea what I'm talking about) by living vegetarian during May.  Yikes.  Most definitely not!  See what I mean about people getting defensive?  Weird, weird world.

When May is over I don't plan on going to Tucano's everyday for lunch but I will return to eating meat sparingly and when it is served to me.  I refuse to have people make a special dish for me, I will eat whatever is served.  

So far, Meatless May has been successful....I've only dreamt about eating meat twice (seriously) and I'm only craving fried chicken and a pork burrito from Cafe Rio.  Other than that it has been great for forcing me to be more creative with my meal choices and planning ahead.

I'm suggesting everyone I know to watch "Food, Inc" (also suggested by Eliza).  It's not some liberal, PETA produced documentary but more of an inside look at the food industry.  It's not pro-vegetarian.  It's pro-"know where your food comes from".  I highly recommend it!

My little brother will be going to the Chile, Antofagasta mission!  None of us expected that at all!  He has been studying Mandarin Chinese for the past 2 years so we kind of all thought he might be sent to China.  We are all so proud and excited for him!  He is ready to go now but has to wait until July 28th (two days before my mom's birthday...)  Out of his group of good friends from high school my brother is the last to get his call but not the last to leave.  His friend, Trenton, got his call a month ago but will be entering the MTC after Taylor!  I expected him to go into the MTC in late August or September because he doesn't even turn 19 until August 15th! 

This is a new venture for our family - our first missionary and we are behind him 100%.  He has always been such a great example to me and to the rest of my siblings of true Christ-like love and service.  I know he will serve an honorable mission and (somehow) become even more incredible.

Trivia - it has only rained once in recorded history in this area of Chile!  Crazy!  NASA uses their landscape to test Mars and lunar landing/roving equipment.

I Always Wanted....


I used to be a very sad girl.  I hated myself, primarily for physical reasons.  I blamed all of my unhappiness on the fact that I thought I was unattractive.

I would think that if I had a clear complexion, I would be happy.
If I had good hair, I would be happy.
If I had smaller hips and more narrow shoulders, I would be happy.

I tricked myself into believing that happiness could come from such ridiculous things.  It has been a struggle to realize that genuine happiness and personal satisfaction has to come from within, not from without.  

We are all perfect, yet we are all flawed...and we all have every right to be happy.

What To Do?


What do you do when your head and your heart want different things?

I know that our whole life we will be faced with difficult challenges and we will sometimes be forced to make the choice between right and right.  Knowing this doesn't make this any easier.  (Neither does blogging about it).

In my case - you go with your head.  Not always, but I have to this time.

Notes for Daughters


Today while in a waiting room, I picked up a Good Housekeeping magazine and an article caught my eye.  It's titled, "Wear the Corsage" and is about a woman who will never have a daughter but this is the advice she would give if she ever had had a girl.  Here are some of my favorites and ones that I want your input on:

Live as if there is enough talent, success, luck and fabulousness to go around.

Hard work is important. Choose what exhilarates you, not what exhausts you.

If you are wondering if he's "The One", he isn't.

Believe in "The One"
(not always easy, for sure!)
