Self Soothing

Whenever I find myself down and in need of comfort, I end up somewhere on the National Mall. Apparently this is my major coping technique.

I will hang this in my house for my children to imprint on their brains

Two Saturdays ago I witnessed an atrocity that shook me to the core. I didn't step in when I feel like I should have, I allowed an innocent to suffer and didn't make a difference in the life of one who couldn't defend himself. The situation itself was awful but I am more disturbed by myself.

I ended up down at MLK after the incident and sobbed (and sobbed and sobbed) when I saw the quote above. What a great reminder of who I want to be.

Makes Me Laugh

I just really love this.
What better way to start a new week?
I hope yours is wonderful!

huh.

Have you ever met someone that you feel an immediate connection with? Guy, girl - doesn't matter. You know that you want to spend time with this new awesome person because you share so many of the same interests and let's face it - they actually laugh at your jokes. Like 87% of them.

So it's odd and unsettling when that person doesn't seem to want to strike up an immediate kinship. I don't get this because who doesn't want a new best friend? Am I the only one who is excited to extend my group of soul mates? Am I a crazy person? You can tell me the truth....

(obviously I just went through this or I wouldn't be blogging it)
(ugh.)

Chicken Dance

I love how now parents make sure to get a picture or video of some traumatizing event in their child's life before stepping in to rescue. I should probably never procreate.

I love coming home to these beautiful weeds

Morbid Kid

Notice the title of the post? It is in reference to ME. When I was a kid I would wake up in the middle of the night and assume that a noise coming from my closet had awoken me. Of course my over active I-read-too-many-books brain would determine that there was a killer in the closet who was just waiting for me to fall asleep again so he could jump out and stab me to death. Yeah. Fitting title, no?

I cleverly had a plan to mitigate any unnecessary stabbing. There would definitely be stabbing and death, however I wanted to make sure that it was all over and done with one fatal blow. I would wake up, rearrange the blankets so that I was covered only to my middle chest and would extend my neck so it was fully exposed. My thought process being that a single slice could take care of it, rather than be covered up which would require more work on his part.

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME??? It was all so logical when I was a kid and now looking back I think I probably should have mentioned to my mom that I was helping to facilitate my own murder every night.

Adjectives

Just some of the words that describe what I feel when I look at this photo:

Happy. Content. Hopeful. Grateful. Whole. Thrilled. Fulfilled. Secure.
Right.

All is well, all is good, and I'm feeling so blessed in this exact moment. I'm so in love with these ladies and so grateful that they're mine.

The Happiness Project

I started reading "The Happiness Project" this morning and very happily dove in head first. A couple pages into the book is the author's Secrets of Adulthood. They reminded me of this post I wrote a while ago. Reading it today I still find all my lessons quite valid, however I would definitely love to incorporate some of the ones I read today. My favorites are:

-People don't notice your mistakes as much as you do
-Do good, feel good
-It's important to be nice to everyone
-Happiness doesn't always make you feel happy
-What you do every day matters more than what you do every once in a while
-If you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough

Let's add to that list! Check out my life lessons here, mull over those above from author Gretchen Rubin, and leave your own personal ones in the comment section. Have a great night!

Deaf Studies Today 2012

We had a great conference this year! I say that without knowing if it's actually true or not because I spent most of it in the interpreter room away from all the action. We have this conference every 2 years at UVU and it's just a wonderful time to get together to learn about what is currently being researched in this field that we love so much. It also serves as a mini college reunion and for that I am SUPER grateful! I adore the amazing ladies I went to school with and I was constantly disappointed that I didn't get to spend more time with them (*ahem* Danica!)

This conference refreshes me and excites me for the promise of a bright future for the community.
I bleed green, yes I do!

Easter With the Babies

I flew in on Easter Sunday and was welcomed by the best nieces and nephews in the world! They made this amazing sign (totally made me cry - you shocked by that?) and each of them had to point out which letters they were in charge of coloring.

Oh for cute! My dad had this rock engraved for an anniversary gift - so sweet!

Porter-man

Grant's smile face has turned into a grimace lately but I think I got a couple pictures of upturned corners of the mouth at some point. He's just at such a yummy stage of life right now!

And Miss Haven has been losing teeth like a boxing champ! She looks so much like my sister, Elisabeth, I'm jealous

Dying eggs with children is........interesting? Is stressful?

I Just Love This

Naomi Says....

On Monday I went to lunch with my mom, sister and her four children. The conversation eventually turned to cooking and I lamented the fact that I don't have anyone to cook for. My sister said that I am welcome to come to her house any time and do all the cooking. I turned to my niece, Naomi, who is four and asked, "Should I do that? Should I come cook for you?"

With all the brightness of the sun she nodded and said, "Any time!"

I immediately buried my face in my hands to cover up the crocodile tears that had begun their quick descent down my face. Cried and cried like a big baby in a Cafe Rio because I just love them so much. Any time would be every day if it were possible.

I think my crying started to scare my niece and my sister noticed that so she said, "I think Aunt Rachel needs a hug".

Sweet Naomi put her arms around me and exclaimed, "Tickle tickle!". What would have been a more appropriate exclamation would have been "Honk honk!" because that dear little girl gave my right boob two bitty squeezes instead of the intended hug.

My sadness turned to uncontrollable laughter in a split second. We sat there laughing that silent, ab sculpting sort of laugh for a couple minutes. You know which one I'm talking about. Naomi didn't understand but she seemed quite happy that I was no longer crying.

And as my sister noted, at least I can say that I got some action while out here....

home again

I'm currently sitting in Chicago O'Hara airport waiting for my connecting flight to Salt Lake City. This week is the biannual Deaf Studies Today conference at my alma mater and I am coordinating the interpreters for it. I am so excited! This will be the third time I have participated in the conference and it just always seems to get better and better!

I will be spending a few days with my family before heading down to Utah Valley for the start of the conference on Thursday. What a lucky occurrence to have Easter coincide with the timig of Deaf Studies Today. I get to spend tonight and tomorrow with my parents and my older sisters family. The joy of being an aunt is one of the greatest blessings I could have ever imagined. Then a few days with my parents and then on to Orem!

This will be very, very long hours but it is such a fun time! And I live the subject of Deaf studies so it's always wonderful to sneak away for a workshop or two, see old classmatesand teachers - all of whom I credit with making me the advocate I am today. I am so grateful to have had a college major that awakened a fire in me.

I'm also grateful for this Easter holiday. He is risen and is the reason. I hope you have a lovely day!
